American Gun Owners Rights And Responsibilities
by Al Finn

Our enlightened Founding Fathers had long experience with
governments that were suppressive and obstructive. Due to
this, they realized that force might be needed to secure
and maintain the liberty that they fought for.

That is why they created the 2nd amendment:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security
of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear
Arms shall not be infringed."

It is our right to keep and bear arms. We must always
defend it. We must make sure that the politicians are
not allowed to interfere with or misinterpret our
constitutional rights.

If you are a man in charge of a household, and you
care about the safety of yourself, your family, your
community and your nation then you should own and be
expert in the use of a hand gun and rifle.

As a gun owner you have responsibilities. These are
similar to those that you have in connection to other
powerful tools that you own.

1. You need to be expert in its use.

Far too many deaths and injuries each year are caused
by inexpert people firing guns. There is no good excuse
for anyone owning a gun not to become excellent in it's
use.

When you first learned to drive or operate a power tool,
you probably were "grooved in" by someone who really knew
how to do it. It's much the same with a hand gun or
rifle. You'll really learn gun handling by someone who
really knows what he is doing, not by someone who is
pretending he does.

I knew a fellow who had many years of Harley riding
under his belt. Very well respected amongst his peers.
One day he realized that maybe he "didn't know it all"
and signed up for a "Harley Course" from a Superbike
School. His pals laughed -- they knew it all. A few hours
of expert instruction later though, he had a whole new
level of competence - and real (albeit grudging) admiration
from those that had been laughing.

I remember a friend who had many years of riding Harleys
in clubs. He was very well respected amongst his peers.
One day he realized he "didn't know it all" and enrolled
in a "Harley Course" at a Superbike School. "Everyone"
laughed -- they knew it all. It only took a few hours
of expert instruction later though, to have him riding
circles around them at a much higher level of compentence.
A lot signed up for the same course -- and they all stopped
laughing.

Recognizing that you don't know something when you don't
- and then doing what it takes to get competent - is a lot
more manly than pretending that you already know all about
a handgun when you really don't. Actually, this last is
not manly; it's childish, and dangerous, too.

2. Clean your firearms and keep them secure.

The maintainance and storage of your firearms is even more
important than the maintainance and storage of your power
tools.

There are lots of fingers - and lives - that have been lost
just because a man did not keep his power saw - or his gun -
clean and in good shape.

There have been many fingers lost - and many lives -
because someone didn't keep his power tool (or his rifle or
gun)well maintained and secure.

There is a lot of talk about the pros and cons of gun
control. It usually gets big after someone really screwed
up gets hold of a gun and does mischief. Or a kid happens
upon Daddy's rifle in the closet.

Did you know? Just about one-third of all the US's violent
crime is committed with guns stolen from the homes of
law abiding citizens.

"Gun Control" legislated into our lives to take our arms
away is not going to save anyone's life. "Gun Control" in
our own homes - knowing how to properly use our guns,
clean them, maintain them and store them in proper gun
safes - is something that we all must practice in order to
save lives and preserve our liberty and security.

No one's life will be saved through "Gun Control"
legislation. But, "Gun Control" in our own homes
- knowing how to properly use and maintain our guns and
rifles, and storing them in proper gunsafes - are very
real and practical measures that we can use to save lives
and yet keep our freedoms and security.
